WASTE TRANSFER STATIONS
The Project receives the municipal solid waste in a network of 10 regional Waste Transfer Stations in Kozani, Amynteo, Voio, Grevena, Deskati, Eordea, Kastoria, Servia, Siatista and Florina. From there, they are transferred to the MBT Plant with the use of special waste trucks.
The waste is unloaded in the Reception bunker. The automated crane feeds the moving floor, which further forwards the waste into the Pretreatment Unit, where the bulky waste is removed to protect the downstream equipment.
MECHANICAL SEPARATION UNIT
Here, the recyclable products are separated from the organic fraction heading to the composting unit, and the residue, that is disposed of to the adjacent sanitary landfill, with the help of a drum screen and a vibrating screen.
For the further separation of recyclable materials, the mixed waste go through optical and ballistic separators, in order to recover streams of mixed paper, plastic film and hard plastic packages, while at the end of the line magnets and eddy current separators recover ferrous materials and aluminum cans.
All recovered materials pass through the quality control cabins, where impurities are removed, and finally end up to the recyclables’ baler, as well as the metal press, to facilitate their further transport.
BIOLOGICAL TREATMENT - COMPOSTING UNIT
ΤThe organic fraction is led to the Composting Unit for biological treatment in closed, horizontal aerobic bioreactors, where it stays stays for at least 2 weeks in the composting boxes in a fully controlled environment, with respect to the prevailing temperature, humidity and ventilation conditions. Aerobic treatment is carried out, under controlled conditions, and a hygienized and partially stabilized organic material is obtained.
COMPOST MATURATION SHED
The organic material produced is then unloaded to the maturation shed and strewn in trapezoidal piles, where it remains for an appropriable period. A specialized windrow turner is used for effective compost turning, when needed, according to temperature, oxygen and humidity onsite measurements.
The stabilized product is finally led to the Refinery Unit, where the matured organic material is separated from the residual fraction (hard plastics, gravel, inerts, plastic film, glass) that will be finally disposed of a the adjacent residue landfill. The produced Compost material is now considered to be fully refined and is suitable for final use.
RESIDUE SANITARY LANDFILL
The MBT residues are led for final disposal to the sanitary landfill which is fully sealed and includes a leachate collection network, as well as a biogas collection network.
DEODORIZATION - DEDUSTING
Exhaust air is collected from all enclosed waste treatment areas and treated in central dedusting and deodorization systems, in order to reduce emissions to low levels. This allows comfortable, safe and harmless working conditions for operating staff, while the release of dust and odors to the environment is prevented.
WASTE WATER TREATMENT PLANT
Wastewaters produced in the MBT Plant, as well as leachate from the landfill are collected and directed to the Waste Water Treatment Plant. The waste water undergoes first a biological process and then a physicochemical treatment in the reverse osmosis unit in order to recover water suitable for all the industrial uses and the irrigation needs of the Plant.
SCADA AUTOMATION SYSTEM
For the equipment control of the MBT, as well as the connection with the data of the 10 Waste Transfer Stations, a complete automation system has been installed so that the entire plant can operate automatically.
OTHER AUXILIARY FACILITIES
The plant also includes auxiliary facilities such as the administration building, where the chemical laboratory, the infirmary, the events’ hall and the administration offices are located, the petrol station, the washing facility, the workshop, the flare, the fire-fighting tanks, etc.
